UNDP supports regional development of Imereti

TBILISI. 06 March 2007 – Kutaisi will host a series of events tomorrow to highlight the progress in the regional development activities implemented with help from the UNDP office in Georgia.

The day’s agenda will start off with an official opening of a resource centre devoted to the promotion of gender equality, by Parliament Speaker Nino Burjanadze. Supported by UNDP and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the Centre will serve Imereti residents as a source of gender-related information and training. It will also help women in the region engage in business activities.

This will be followed by an information session organized by the West Georgian representative office of the Parliament. Launched back in 2005 with assistance from UNDP, the Kutaisi office helps Parliament effectively operate on the regional level.

At the end of the day, heads of local administration of the different regions of Georgia will discuss the regional development issues at a specialised seminar.

UNDP Resident Representative in Georgia, Robert Watkins, and Parliament Chairperson Nino Burjanadze will attend the events.

UNDP’s support to the region of Imereti is part of its wider assistance to governance reform in Georgia.
