Special Initiatives

Achievement of the Millennium Development Goals

In all its activities, UNDP seeks to promote the achievement of the MDGs – eight Millennium Development Goals which were agreed by an absolute majority of the world’s countries in response to the main development challenges.

Georgia has yet to develop its national MDG strategy. Nevertheless, a first baseline report (2004) and a follow-up progress report (2005) have been produced. In 2007, UNDP assisted the Tbilisi Municipality in drafting an MDG report and, in 2008, was asked to support the monitoring efforts to measure progress to date.

National response to HIV/AIDS

UNDP is implementing a project to develop policy recommendations to the government of Georgia which aim to improve the legal environment and attitudes affecting people living with HIV/AIDS.

In cooperation with the Global Fund project UNDP has supported the revision of the HIV/AIDS-related legislation in Georgia. The law on HIV/AIDS was ratified by the Georgian Parliament in November 2009.
