Crisis Prevention and Recovery

In the crisis areas, UNDP works closely with local people to address their social and economic needs. UNDP also assists the Georgian government in adopting national strategies to effectively counter the risk of natural and man-made disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, and urban and technological disasters.

From crisis to development

UNDP’s programme for early recovery in the Shida Kartli region was set in motion in September 2008, barely 6 weeks after the armed conflict in August. In January 2009, thanks to funding from the European Union of Euro 4.4million, we were able to expand the programme to the two other regions of Georgia affected by the crisis: Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Samegrelo.

In the Shida Kartli region, the project benefited more than 10,000 people in some 40 villages through the repairing of 40 infrastructure facilities, including drainage and drinking water supply, school buildings, kindergartens and municipal offices. 

UNDP donated winter wheat seeds and provided ploughing and other agriculture services in 4 villages where the production cycle had been completely broken. Overall, UNDP helped cultivate 650ha of arable land, thus securing their main source of income for more than a thousand farmers and their families.

In the new settlements of Metekhi and Teliani, UNDP assisted about 90 displaced families in cultivating the orchards provided for them by the Georgian government.

In the Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Samegrelo regions UNDP’s assistance focuses on small business development by ensuring access to micro-finance for displaced and low-income people.   

Disaster Risk Reduction

UNDP works with the National Security Council and the ministries of Internal Affairs, Regional Development and Infrastructure, and Environment Protection and Natural Resources to facilitate the adoption by the Georgian government of relevant policies in the priority areas of Disaster Risk Reduction.
