Renewable energy resources for local energy supply
Description
The goal of the project is to remove key barriers hampering the use of renewable energy for local energy supply.
The project aims to:
- Address legal and regulatory barriers to: (a) provide renewable energy producers with easy access to the market, (b) ensure the collection of payments, and (c) encourage investments;
- Introduce and leverage financing for a pilot renewable energy fund/credit line, and
- Increase public awareness and capacity to lay the grounds for the development and implementation of renewable energy projects.
The project promotes the use of geothermal resources for hot water and heat supply, as well as the use of small hydro power for local power generation in Georgia.
The project has two components. The first Technical Assistance (TA) Component is managed by UNDP Georgia. The second, Financial Component, is managed by the German Bank of Reconstruction (KfW) and aims at establishing Renewable Energy Revolving Fund and a credit line.
The implementing partner for the technical assistance component is the national Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, and for the financial component – the Ministry of Energy. Both agencies, together with the project donors, form the Project Steering Committee.
