BATUMI. December 2009 - Poverty and unemployment remain high in many regions of Georgia despite the economic reforms the country enjoyed in recent years. One of those areas is Adjara – a beautiful region on the Black Sea coast. Despite vast potential for tourism, agriculture and trade, the region has one of the highest poverty levels in the country. The rate of unemployment in Adjara is 25%, roughly 8% higher than in other parts of Georgia.
UNDP assistance to the region boosts the efforts of the national and regional governments by promoting small businesses through a new initiative – a business incubator.
